EU Characters Project

THE PROBLEM

The EU was born out of a dream of freedom, unity and peace that bound 28 countries, making the whole greater than the sum of its parts. But with Brexit, the intangible, fragile concept that was meant to bring us together is at risk of being torn apart. We’re replacing “we” with “me,” closing our doors and waving flags that divide us rather than unite us. And as the media pumps out disillusion rather than optimism, It’s safe to say our future is uncertain. But we need to remember where we came from and that Europe is worth saving. So rather than debating over what Europe could become, Let’s restore pride in what being European stands for. We need to remind the world what makes the EU so damn special. We need to remind our leaders that our greatest strength is our diversity. We need to remind our citizens the EU is more than just a political agreement, It’s a community.

EU CHARACTERS PROJECT

I came up with the concept of the EU Characters project and font from this idea of community and decided to visualize this by creating a font in which each is letter be designed by a different designer from each country in the European Union to ultimately show that despite being different, they can still stand united (even if it's a little weird and quirky).

Through the power of Behance and creative friends, I was able to find an artist to create each character. I shared the purpose and simple instructions with each of them, and they responded with their letter and their thoughts on the EU.

Although the font was the key part of the project, a brand identity doesn't stop at typography. I wanted to explore what the EU branding could look like and how the letters united together in action.

Pattern

I wanted to create a modern and playful pattern of the EU's abstract borders blurring together into one colorful and amorphous shape.
